The choice of mesh in laparoscopic incisional hernia repair is of paramount importance due to the unique placement of the prosthesis on the inside of the peritoneum.
The ideal mesh must be:
•
Biologically inert, causing no adhesions to bowel Macroporus to allow ingrowth of the Peritoneum
•
Strong, to accommodate the forces involved in ventral hernia repair.
•
Thin, to allow easy passage through a trocar.
The latest generation of hernia repair devices incorporate a NiTinol ring around the perimeter of the mesh. This ring allows the mesh to immediately spring open once placed in the abdomen facilitating placement and fixation.
